Boatwright’s Dining Hall Restaurant Review

This week WDW Mouse Tales visits Boatwright’s Dining Hall at the Port Orleans Riverside Resort at Walt Disney World. This restaurant is themed to a Louisiana boat workshop and serves southern style dinner. You can find the dinner menu here and the dessert menu here.

Appetizer

So tonight for an appetizer we chose the Cajun-seasoned Crawfish Bites served with Remoulade and priced at $10.49. For a second time since we started reviewing Disney Restaurants the appetizer was amazing and was definitely our favorite part of the meal.

The first thing out on the table was a basket of hot cornbread with whipped butter. What a great way to start a meal, really delicious and a great precursor to the appetizer on the way.

I have never had Crawfish before and the way I describe the taste and texture is a cross between shrimp and calamari. They were served with a Remoulade drizzled over them which was kind of like a tarter sauce with a little bit of a dill taste and served over a bed of lettuce. These Crawfish bites were so delicious my wife and I were fighting over the last bite. By the way I gave in as a gentleman. :)

Entrees

So ladies first, my wife went with the Jambalaya which the menu describes as a Creole recipe with Spiced Chicken Thighs, Andouille Sausage, Shrimp, Rice and Vegetables and priced at $17.99. It was an “okay” tasting plate of food. The 2 shrimp she had were very delicious as was the andouille but there was an overwhelming amount of celery and roasted red peppers (which you can see in the pictures).

We have noticed here and at Shutters that Disney restaurants on average might be using instant rice in their dishes. We don’t know if this is a fact, but the rice really has that “Uncle Ben’s” type texture and taste. This is a minor quibble though and overall the Jambalaya was an okay meal. She recommends trying a different entree. Quite a few people around us were ordering the Pork Chop plate which looked and smelled very tasty.

I decided to go with the Slow-roasted Prime Rib with Three-Cheese Hash-Brown Potatoes and Cabernet Sauce priced at $25.99. The Prime Rib was a nice size and cooked just as ordered and the Cabernet Sauce had a very nice flavor.

The only downside to this plate was the Hash-Brown Potatoes which really did not have much flavor and was a very small portion. Also I find it odd that this did not come with a vegetable as well but nonetheless I was extremely full from the Prime Rib so not a deal breaker.

Dessert

The dessert menu at Boatwright’s is really very limited but a popular southern dessert is of course Pecan Pie so we decided to go with that. The pie was priced at $5.49 and was served with a scoop of Edy’s Ice Cream and a caramel drizzle. This Pecan Pie was delicious and had just the right amount of sweetness and was a very satisfying end to a nice meal.

The Restaurant’s theme and decor and an evening of romance suggestion

First I want to tell you the the decor and atmosphere at Boatwright’s is top notch and the lighting is very comforting and relaxing. The restaurant is covered in ship building tools and one of the waitresses observed me taking photos of the restaurant and was kind enough to give me a guide describing all of the tools on the walls. This is a really cool level of detail that only Disney would think of.

In my opinion Port Orleans Riverside is a beautiful resort full of romantic atmosphere and a river running through the resort. One of the questions I have had posed to me in an email is what kind of romantic things can I do at Walt Disney World. Well... Port Orleans Riverside can make for a great date night. After dinner take a ride in a Horse Drawn Carriage around the property then jump on a boat and ride out to Downtown Disney and make an evening of it.

Final Thoughts

So overall even though not every part of the meal was extraordinary, the whole Port Orleans Riverside experience is. If you have a free evening on your next vacation don’t pass up an opportunity for a lovely evening of relaxing at Port Orleans.
